College Applications: What You Need to Know

When applying to a college or program, read all instructions carefully and meet every deadline. Late applications are rarely accepted, so plan to submit everything well before the due date.

Important:
Our offices are closed during the winter holiday. If you need transcripts or counselor recommendations, request them at least two weeks before break.

Requirements vary by school, so always check the college’s website. Here's a general guide:


Two-Year Colleges or Technical Schools

  • Application

  • Official, sealed transcript(s)

  • Placement test or interview

  • Application fee


Public In-State Four-Year Colleges & Universities

  • Application

  • Official, sealed transcript(s)

  • SAT or ACT scores (some may require ACT with writing)

  • Personal statement (recommended, even if optional)

  • Application fee


Private In-State Four-Year Colleges & Universities

  • Application

  • Official, sealed transcript(s)

  • SAT or ACT scores (some may require ACT with writing)

  • Personal statement or essay

  • Letter of recommendation and/or counselor evaluation

  • Application fee


Out-of-State Public or Private Four-Year Colleges & Universities

  • Application

  • Official, sealed transcript(s)

  • SAT or ACT scores (may include ACT writing or SAT Subject Tests)

  • Personal statement or essay

  • Letters of recommendation and/or counselor evaluation

  • Application fee


Tip: Create a checklist for each school you're applying to. Staying organized and ahead of deadlines makes the process smoother—and less stressful.
