Financial Aid & FAFSA/WASFA
All seniors applying to college, university, or a tech/trade school should also apply for financial aid—this includes FAFSA, WASFA, and scholarships.
Financial aid applications open on October 1 each year. You do not need to know where you're going yet to fill them out. Once you’ve made your decision, contact your college’s financial aid office to make sure you’re applying for all available aid and scholarships.
Check each college’s scholarship deadlines on their financial aid or scholarship pages!
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-based financial aid. You'll need information about you and your family's finances, so plan to complete it with a parent/guardian.
To complete the FAFSA:
-
Create an FSA ID (for both student and parent/guardian) at studentaid.gov.
-
Gather the following:
-
Social Security Numbers (student & parent)
-
Driver’s license or state ID (if you have one)
-
Tax returns, W-2s, and bank statements (student & parent)
-
Any other financial documents (investments, child support, etc.)
-
-
Start your FAFSA at studentaid.gov.
-
The student fills out their section first.
-
The parent/guardian fills out their section next.
-
Both sign using their FSA IDs.

WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid)
The WASFA is for undocumented students and others who can’t complete the FAFSA but still qualify for Washington State aid.
To complete the WASFA:
-
Go to wsac.wa.gov/wasfa
-
Register for a new account.
-
Answer a short eligibility questionnaire.
-
Gather the same financial info as listed above.
-
Complete and submit the application.
Reminder:
Financial aid is first-come, first-served. Applying early increases your chances of getting the most aid possible!
